“How is the Benin Looting and the dispersion of the royal treasures narrated today in Benin-City among ordinary people?”
General aim of Project:Reconnect the European colonial collections to the people to whom they once belonged: the case of the Benin looting (1897)
Organization:Under the supervision of Priscilia Eholor a small team of 3 or 4 young persons, preferably girls between, 17 and 24 years old, undertake a survey on the memories/reminiscences of a very chapter of the history of the Benin Kingdom
Goal:to collect narratives, anecdotes, stories related to the Benin looting (1897) as told / transmitted today.
Target audience:“ordinary people” : to highlight the transmission of historical narratives among non-specialists (not academics or members of the royal family).
Media:The collected material is to be audio/video recorded (image quality of a smartphone)
Perspective:
1) The result of the survey will be integrated to an internet site, and other cultural programs (conferences, exhibitions, documentary films, etc.)
2) If survey successful, the Benin-city group (3 or 4 persons) may present their results in Paris
3) Possible trip to Benin-City of a group of 3 or 4 persons of the French side
Schedule:
- Monthly SKYPE meeting between the French and Nigerian group.
- Survey to be finalized end of November 2018.
